What is CNC Wire EDM?
CNC wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a process whereby electrical pulses are transmitted through wire to erode conductive materials and remove material until the desired shape/ profile is achieved. Although the process is commonly referred to as “Wire Cutting”, the wire does not come in contact with the part, however, it maintains a spark gap to the workpiece. This means that there is no cutting force exerted onto the workpiece from the wire which is advantageous for a number of reasons.

CNC Wire EDM at Argotek
Argotek houses two CNC wire EDMs (Electrical Discharge Machines). These machines use electrical pulses passing through a wire to cut materials and achieve the desired part shape. CNC wire EDM can achieve thin-walled components, tight internal corner radii (slightly more than the wire radius of 0.125mm), and narrow slits in components. Although wire EDM can be used to cut extremely hard metals, the process can only be completed on materials that have electrical conductivity. Internal keyways, Punches, and Dies are common parts/ features to be wire cut.
